The UK Centre for Carnival Arts is the force behind the Luton carnival held on the second May Bank Holiday weekend. As well as producing this annual spectacle, UKCCA works year-round in the community in schools and residential homes, offers music lessons at its centre in St Mary’s Road and participates in multi-faith and multi-cultural events in the town. The Steel Charitable Trust has supported its work in local schools, culminating in National Children’s Carnival Week.
Chalk streams are a rare and unique habitat with only about 220 existing in the world. Of those, 85% are in the south of England and the River Lea in Luton is one of those. Since 2022, Groundwork East has been engaged in a regeneration project in Hockwell Ring, through which Houghton Brook, a tributary of the River Lea, runs, with funding from The Steel Charitable Trust.
