This video, filmed in a Luton school, demonstrates what The Brilliant Club‘s Scholars Programme is, which The Steel Charitable Trust is currently supporting in both primary and secondary schools in Luton. As well as academic tutorials led by PhD researchers, older students are given the opportunity to visit competitive universities to learn about university life and celebrate their achievements through a graduation event. Academic outcomes for students selected for this programme are very positive.
The UK Centre for Carnival Arts is the force behind the Luton carnival held on the second May Bank Holiday weekend. As well as producing this annual spectacle, UKCCA works year-round in the community in schools and residential homes, offers music lessons at its centre in St Mary’s Road and participates in multi-faith and multi-cultural events in the town. The Steel Charitable Trust has supported its work in local schools, culminating in National Children’s Carnival Week.
Chalk streams are a rare and unique habitat with only about 220 existing in the world. Of those, 85% are in the south of England and the River Lea in Luton is one of those. From 2022-2025, with funding from The Steel Charitable Trust, Groundwork East was engaged in a regeneration project in Hockwell Ring, through which Houghton Brook, a tributary of the River Lea, runs.
